School's Out Party!

It's official. Our kids finally hosted a party at our house. (Hey, cut me a little slack. We only moved here four years ago)! Yes, I know you're probably thinking, except for birthday parties right? No, they haven't had "friend" birthday parties either. Aren't we the meanest parents ever? Spencer just says we're cheap, but the truth is, we just lack the ambition to invite more chaos into our already chaotic lives.

Really, the kids haven't asked for friend birthday parties yet, and so each year we've figured, "If they don't care about having a friends party, we certainly don't" and have just done a really fun family celebration, often with relatives or close friends of the family. And, as far as I'm concerned, it's been just fine. As the kids get older and care more, we'll indulge then. Our motto to this point in parenting has been "keep it simple, but special." I could go on about "other reasons" I've been reluctant to encourage birthday parties, but that'll have to be another post. Because this post is about what we did today.

I told the boys, "I'm all for having a party, as far as you help with the preparations, cleanup, and keeping everyone happy. I'll do the food, but I don't want to entertain you. And, I don't want to hear "I'm bored" or "Can we play video games?." With that said, the boys were great. We had a simple menu of hot dogs, chips and salsa, watermelon, grapes, 7-up and caramel corn. No big deal, but they obviously enjoyed it because there was barely a scrap left when it was over.

The boys were in charge of outside games. They started off with a water balloon fight (even though the temp. never even broke 60 degrees today. No matter, these are tough 6-10 year old boys we're talking about). Then they played ghosts in the graveyard, Baggo, hot box, and ended with some cold and wild rides on the slip and slide. We had eight boys in all and it was one good time!

I need lessons from you. I seem to always be entertaining a boat load of children. We've been out of school for 2 weeks (but hey, who's counting.) and I've bought groceries every 4 days. Hmm, I think we been feeding the neighbors. I like the idea of having the boys in charge of the activities.
