Aging

A few weeks ago, I had an MRI done on my back. That was a strange experience. I’m not really claustrophobic, but started to get a bit uneasy when finding myself in such tight quarters for 30+ minutes. I began to understand how some people totally freak out from the confinement and refuse to proceed.

Another thought I had while lying there was of my one-month old, first born son, waking up during his MRI and the hospital paging Brad and I to come and get him back to sleep. What an unnerving experience that was for us as new parents to await the results. Come to find out, he had developed a bone infection in his left arm and right hip and needed immediate surgery. For six weeks, he was given IV antibiotics through a PIC line. The doctors told us infections such as his could damage a growth plate within 72 hours.

For the next two years, we made regular visits to the orthopedic surgeon for x-rays and follow up. Fortunately, Spencer made a full recovery. Two of my favorite memories from our hospital stay are seeing Spencer smile for the first time and watching his fascination for a mobile above his bed. He smiled at all the doctors and students that came to prod and poke him nonstop. I couldn’t have been more thrilled with my little boy.

Anyway, as far as my back goes, I’ve had pain since 2000, which has progressively gotten worse. The MRI showed spinal degeneration and bulging discs. The good news is, I finally know what’s wrong. The bad news is that I have arthritis and pain in my back, which affects me every day. I’m hoping to find a physical therapist who specializes in the lumber spine who can give me specific exercises and stretches that will help alleviate the pain.

I'm so sad to hear you're still having trouble AM. I hope you find someone who can help you. There's nothing more frustrating than needing help and not being able to get it. I'm glad you've started the process!

I didn't realize Spencer had a problem when he was younger. I hope you get some pain relief. Nothing is worse than trying to be a happy, nice mom when you're in constant pain. You're in my prayers.

I can't believe you could do that MRI...that would kill me to be so confined. I hope they figure out something that will help with the pain. THat's so frustrating, especially when you have kids to carry around!

I totally feel for you on the baby with MRI thing...that's so scary. We had to do it with Lucy and it was tough. I'm so glad he was just fine.

I had to get an MRI after the birth of my first daughter because I had serious back pain that went down my leg. I have two disc bulges and SWEAR by physical therapy and stretches. I had to go 3 times a week for a while and then went down to two and then one. It was a SLOW process, but if you do the stretches faithfully they make a huge huge difference. I am virtually pain free now, but suffered for 2 years really bad pain daily. I would go on long walks and stretch after my therapy was over and it totally worked. Let me know if you have any questions. I am sorry that you have to suffer!
